The biblical figure of an antichrist does not stand in opposition to, as in our colloquially used sense of "anti". The word means rather, "adjacent to" or "beside the Christ but not the Christ." He will deceive many who place him in the role of a Savior and that is the purpose. To keep people from actual salvation. Many influences and institutions, traditions and idols promise to save us: same us time, save us trouble, save us money, save our lives. They are all in the same way, "not Christ"
