What I would direct your attention to is what is not there. That is, as careful as these analyses are, they ignore two pretty gigantic differences between the two scenarios. Some years ago, they began to suggest people start walking places instead of driving to "fight climate change". Then some joker just had to run the numbers to find that, yes of course, walking produced more greenhouse gases than driving.
Just as a rule of thumb I always go by, "If I can think it up sitting around the house, then They can think it up too, and have huge networks and billions in resources to follow up on it." It puts a lot of "crazy ideas" squarely in the realm of possibility.
I always kinda speculated that they could just use textual analysis of social media to find candidate nut cases. Of course, the terribly confounding problem with that is that about 98% of them would be some type of paid shills, maybe even some of their own. And they're just soulless buttholes, not the nut cases they're looking for.
There could not possibly be less effort put into a psychodrama: a trip to Old Navy, flags from Amazon, and poles from Home Depot. Not even a script.
