So far the mutated variants have been less deadly than the original strain, which is expected of a bioweapon. COVID19 is closely related to the common cold, not the flu.

It's a long game of plandemic, Obamacare, gun control, etc. Groups of people who actively formed independent communities have been repeatedly targeted as examples, most recently online groups. When they need an event they trigger someone with covert drugs and mind control, when that isn't enough they do a FF.
It's a combination of COVID, homeless, crime, and BLM riots. People working for Google are living in campers parked on the street. A "dream" job can't get people a place to stay. Fresh content for games usually comes from fresh programmers, but now everything is being outsourced.
Figured stuff like this would happen eventually when I saw how they destroyed so many guns at the end of the 90's. The most dangerous snakes down under make the rules.
To me the idea that the author of this story (astroengineer) assumed quantum FTL communication without ruling out hoaxed mars pictures (from Devon Island, Canada according to the OP), makes this just an interesting work of fiction.
