Personal story: I started gaining weight after college and switched to diet soda. “Sounded” healthy and I slowly drank more and more (even though I barely drank any soda to begin with). I had a massive seizure at work and woke up in the ER. Several years of uncontrolled seizures, loss of drivers license for a long period, thousands of dollars, several neurologists and many tests later, the result? “don’t consume aspartame, it can cause seizures.” I stopped drinking it and stopped having seizures. Wild. They never diagnosed me phenylketonuria, but the warning on the label shouldn’t be taken lightly. It destroyed years of my life. Never in a million years would I have attributed seizures to Diet Coke/aspartame. Oddly enough, I have reactions to msg too. Curious if that’s a common occurrence to be sensitive to both - maybe a genetic enzyme trait?
