I Avoid Nvidia and Broadcom (to avoid propriety drivers, I have good luck with AMD). I install Debian 13 with the MATE desktop (resurrected gnome2) . I maintain packages with synaptic. Debian still defaults to having a 'root' user.
Debian uses the LTS version of packages so you don't get forced updates.
AMD 'gets it' ---- they are included in the Linux kernel.
Typical CPU usage is 5% to 8%
Updates/upgrades are as smooth as silk without the proprietary drivers. Remember that Apple is way more restrictive on its hardware selection than I am.
