To your points, "Israel could have provided a better narrative". This narrative seems to be working. Its given Israel license to exterminate Palestinians and receive billions from the US to do so. Israeli citizens are no longer protesting in the streets at Netenyahu's power grab so I would argue the narrative is accomplishing Israeli goals.

Regarding the prisoners, I have 2 theories. 1. Its fake and Israel is releasing fake videos of hostages (actors) that gives Israel an excuse to genocide. 2. Israeli controlled Hama's is keeping the hostages to have an excuse for genocide. Israeli is killing 35,000 Palestinian women and children....they have to legitimize this is some way and the only way they can is through the hostage narrative. It's really concerning to see this journal labeled 'stolen' or accept Ashley's argument it was stolen. This was abandoned property left by Ashley when she vacated a house.
