you don't necessarily need self-editing programs for that, just a database of sorts with user action statistics, then parsing that data whenever needed.

Some things could be done properly only with self-editing approach. No database could add functionality that does not exist. Say, you have an image editor and user often rise red by 5%, brightness by 10% and contrast by 20%, then self-modifying approach could make it happen in one pass, creating new function for pixel processing, instead of doing the same sequentially as user do. If image is huge, this will save tons of user time. Or you will have to implement one-pass processing functions for all possible combinations of basic adjustments beforehand which is nearly impossible for any, more or less complex, program.

Also, im many laguages, usual unnamed functions are called lambdas for marketing proposes. Lambda is a function that returns a new function when called. In original implementations, this new function did not exist in memory until lambda called, then new code generated and then you could call it. Today, even if it is a language with lambdas (real ones, not nameless functions, like C#) machine code that should be generated on the fly is precompiled during parsing and compilation, and lambda just returns an address of that precompiled function code.

What's the lock.

"Lock" is when trajectory predicted by radar in agreement with trajectory of missile. That means it is possible now to shoot the target, since you know where it will be in near future and where AD missile should be to intercept target. Lock does not mean hit. If target could maneur, or too fast, AD missile could miss, even if it have some onboard targeting system. AD missile could have a system to adjust course on the go using data from radar, but that is tricky challenge to make it work, and have limitations, f.e. data excahnge take time, and at the speeds near or higher than speed of sound it could took too long to really help.

Really there is nothing special or secret in signatures at all. You are getting few parameters from radar - distance, altitude, speed, trajectory, reflected signal level and so on. Each target have its own set of parameters. For conventional ballistic and cruise missiles and different civilian flying objects, set of parameters is very specific, so you could easily determine the target type and act accordingly. Problems begin with unconventional targets.

I don't think it is a hoax too. If you are not targeting top efficiency, anti-missile defence system is perfectly doable, and Israel have (had?) enough engineeres to create one, nothing exceptional, especially for the modern tech.

Five out of nine intercepted - sorry, but it is very poor performance. Better than Patriot, of course :), but still far from ones that are really best of its kind. Even very old S-300 have significantly higher efficiency.

Either Iron Dome designed for the interception of the very specific targets and due to design flaws could not be upgraded for another kind, either it is yet another example of Western weapons made for the sales and shows, not for the battles.
