I think it's more likely they're showing their age. But, there are some topics I didn't learn until college because the professors were able to choose the books they used rather than the state the child lived in.
And, my experience with my kids taught me a lot. The small amount of philosophy they learned was so edited to be age appropriate that it was wrong. Socrates was given the choice to go against everything he knew and believed in but chose to take hemlock instead. Those are the choices he was given, and he wasn't going to become what he despised.
I did not have a problem with my kids reading the truth, but the teacher pointed out that not all kids should be reading about suicide. Tolstoy believed there was no point in life at the end, so suicide was the best choice. Don't teach kids that message. But, to edit Socrates until the message is gone never sat well.
