All i saw was a dead deer with one leg literally ripped off and the rest of the deer left behind. I looked all around for the leg, or remnants of it for hours and even got lost in the woods for a few hours myself, and found nothing.

That HAS to be the answer. Its the only common bond between all of the people who were gung-ho shot enthusiasts.
