If you go into a deeper meditation, you will learn to turn everything off. Your body, you'll lose track of your breathing, your organs etc. etc.
Eventually you will enter a quasi dreamlike state. Halfway between waking and sleeping. Robert Monroe called this focus 10 or 11 ( I never was ever able to accurately determine the difference). Some other methods refer to this is being at level, which is a state where you have direct contact with your higher self.
If you meditate lower then this, you may reach a state where everything, including your monkey mind (the narrator, the place where your thoughts come from) is turned off. A very comfortable darkness.
In this state you will realize that all you are is a dot of awareness (seemingly attached to some sort of umbilical). The base you just observes. That's it. No emotion, no personality, no judgement, no narration. Just observation. What to do with it I have no clue, but it was nice.
If you have the time, and can separate from your family (disturbances when you are meditating knock you for a loop), you might want to try meditation tapes that create an interference pattern in the center of your brain where your pineal gland is. This allows you to stay aware/awake while you gradually relax your body to sleep.
Right now, I'm using the complete remote influencing training system by Gerald O'Donnell. But there are others, including the Monroe Institute.
You can even meditate more effectively by raising your secondary body energy levels as this will also increase your focus while in trance. Robert Bruce New Energy Ways is pretty easy to learn. You're looking for the high pitched sound at the center of your brain (at least to start, it fades over time).
Yup. The only problem with Robert Bruce is there is a focus on raising energy without focus on the TYPE of energy.
We're getting new age-y here, but if you increase your yang (hot, angry, sith, red) energy, you create problems. If you maintain everything calm and good feeling (yin, cool, calm, jedi, blue, healing), it alleviates the bad burny stuff from happening.
Regardless, meditation yes, good yay! Also Robert Bruce; raise your energy hand off the bed and tell me it doesn't fuck up your worldview.
By the sweat of your brow you will eat your bread, until you return to the ground--because out of it were you taken. For dust you are, and to dust you shall return.
Or, it could just be my mind trying to make myself feel better. I cant discount that.
That's it, I'd say.
What follows are just some unsolicited pointers.
You are not the thing that sees/notices/observes/witnesses. Whatever you want to call it (consciousness, awareness, mind, etc.), it/seeing happens of its own accord, perception happens on its own, understanding happens on its own (e.g., as you read these words, you have no idea why you understand what they mean), etc. The mistake is to believe that you are that which does it; that you own it, that you are its maker. That in itself ("I am aware") is just an impression that arises in the mind, over which you really have no control, even though the impression of control may arise as well. Another mistake is to try to squash "the self", which is impossible; it can only be understood as being part and parcel of the experience as a whole. You can't transcend it, just like you can't transcend your feet, your sight, your hearing, your height, your fingernails, or whatever else; but you can learn how it works and, in doing so, the mind stops regarding those self-impressions as being something "special", something that can be cut-out from experience and "saved" or "cherished" or "that can escape to another realm", and understands that those too arise from nature as all things do. Even if that is the case ("escape to another realm"), again, it's part of nature doing its thing; either way, experience cannot be sliced; it's always, and has always been, whole.
If you can understand experience as happening of its own accord, then you begin to loosen your stranglehold on aspects of it, be they painful or pleasurable. That's what freedom is; freedom from swinging from one thing to the next while under the ambiguous impression that "that's where salvation is, if only I could do things just in the right way/order".
Chuang Tzu was a philosopher in ancient China, who, one night went to sleep and dreamed that he was a butterfly. He dreamt that he was flying around from flower to flower and while he was dreaming he felt free, blown about by the breeze hither and thither. He was quite sure that he was a butterfly. But when he awoke he realised that he had just been dreaming, and that he was really Chuang Tzu dreaming he was a butterfly.

Nyuk nyuk nyuk…But here’s my 2¢:
Carl jung’s active imagination technique is like what you’re describing, letting your mind wonder, but still staying conscious enough to be lucid, speak to beings you encounter, etc. I do this sometimes before going to sleep at night. You can go into these liminal states, where, you get up to pee or something and think you’ve been laying there for hours but you discover it’s only been a few minutes and vice versa.
The kind of meditation I do, I learned at the Shambala meditation center. When a thought Comes into your mind, you just say “thinking” and do that over and over until you’re thinking nothing, just breathing. It’s very healing, imho.
Not sure. I’ve lucid-dreamt before, but if you’re talking about astral projection, when i was younger i tried to do that a lot.. only once did i start to feel the separation and got scared. Felt like two magnets rattling together, but all over.
There’s this timelife book on astral projection that had some instructions. You imagine this parallel line just above your head about six inches and you try to jump/float up it. Lots of relaxing into a state, then a deeper state… dunno what I did, really, it was kind of like when you “jump” as you fall asleep, except my body didn’t move. It was sort of like sleep paralysis, but then i got up and can’t remember if i ever tried it again. It was about the 10th time or so i had tried it, maybe it takes practice.
Have you? If so, how did you achieve it? I've read that you have to focus on your hands and imagine the world around you while your eyes are closed and you're drifting. This leads to lucid dreaming with much practice. A friend told me years ago that lucid dreaming isn't a "step toward OBEs, but...it kinda is." Fucker was usually equally vague about everything, so I couldn't fault him for.bwing himself, but God damn. Gimme something I can work with. "It is, but it isn't." WTF??
TO EVERYONE WHO COMMENTED ON THIS THREAD, THANK YOU FOR YOUR INSIGHT ON THIS EVER INTERESTING MATTER. IT IS VERY MUCH APPRECIATED. I LOVE THIS SUBJECT.
I prefer the term soul as opposed to consciousness. Consciousness requires matter like a brain, or if you want to make the argument, whatever hardware is necessary for a sentient AI to have consciousness. A soul is how I would describe something that lives on past the physical world. Just my opinion.
I prefer the term soul as opposed to consciousness
Consciousness represents recipient; soul (spirit; spiro - "to breathe") represents adaptation of the recipient (perceiving) to the received (perceivable).
Consciousness requires matter
To be matter implies out of; within and in response to immaterial. As life (material) one cannot perceive ones inception/death (immaterial); because one exists as form (life) within the momentum (balance) of flow (inception towards death).
sentinent AI
SENTIO (to perceive) ARTIFICIAL (in ignorance of naturally perceived) INTELLIGENCE (from intelligo, to understand aka to stand under suggested; while ignoring perceived).
hardware
Hardware running software represents the suggested inversion of software (flow) running hardware (form).
Also ive been using your method of meditating since i was very young to fall asleep at night and only about 6 years ago realized that that's an effective method for me to meditate and clear my thoughts.
lawofone.info allows you to search the extensive ra material by words or phrases.
a) to be implies reaction (living) within direction (dying).
b) consenting to suggested Buddhism represents submitting to those suggesting it, so climbing to the rank of master within submission still represents submission.
a) to be (living) implies out of (dying); hence being form (life) within flow (inception towards death) aka an AN'IMAL, noun [Latin animal from anima, air, breath, soul.] + HU'MAN, adjective [Latin humanus; Heb. form, species.] aka animated (animal) form (human).
b) "no" (nothing) was suggested to you as to tempt you to ignore everything perceivable. Without the suggested "no" you can comprehend the perceivable aka being temporary (living) within ongoing (dying) aka form within flow. In other words...flow to form (inception); form within flow (life); form to flow (death) aka forms transmutation out of flow.
We are consciousness
Knowledge (perceivable); consciousness (perceiving) aka action towards reaction aka flow towards form. To be conscious implies out of; within and in response to perceivable knowledge (inspiration); while being tempted to ignore this for understanding (standing under suggested information).
We are still "us" but what we are is not a human being.
a) form state (growth) and flow state (loss) represent the internal power of energy...the source; the base; that which transmutes everything perceivable within itself; including the self differentiation from flow (velocity) into form (resistance) allowing the different ONEs (perceiving) to be conscious of the same ALL (perceivable).
b) the aforementioned "no; not; nothing; nothingness" represents a suggested inversion of the perceivable everything.
c) the suggested "us" tempts one to ignore perceivable differentiation for suggested sameness aka mimicking likeness under the umbrella of sameness. E pluribus unum (out of many one). The few suggest the many to mix the natural differentiation back together; hence transmuting the different form back to the same base flow. Simple alchemy; obfuscated by suggested scientism.
d) in simple...one always represents energy; yet in either flow state or form state, for ALL represents ONE in energy. Sleight of hand: "one for all and all for one"
You perceive the differentiation of the same energy, an energy that sustains itself by utilizing self differentiation to inspire growth (form) within loss (flow). Your struggle of living (growth) within dying (loss) represents the internal power of energy.
We are something else having an experience as a human being
You represent energy..,right now (at this moment aka the momentum of motion) as temporary form within ongoing flow; afterwards as ongoing flow for temporary form.
I guess an analogy would be acting.
Suggested "acting" tempts the many to mimic action; while ignoring to be reaction (life) within direction (inception towards death). The sleight of hand from the few for actors represents the "directors". If an actor "reacts" to a director; then that implies them representing reactors....just like you; yet you choose to ignore perceivable (reaction) for suggested (action).
makes me look like a dinosaur
Have you ever perceive a dinosaur or was it suggested to you?
I would not be one
a) to be (one) implies out of (all).
b) "I would" implies being one thing within perceivable everything; while the suggested "not be" contradicts that.
Once I took off the costume, I would return to what I am.
Where would you put the costume? Everything has to already be there (perceivable) for you (perceiving) to have the choice to wear a costume. You exist as a temporary ingredient (form) at the center (momentum) of the ongoing base (flow).
Anyway, we are not human beings.
a) each one represents an animal (animated) human (form) out of animating flow.
b) WE (implies one thing perceiving other things) ARE (implies to be one thing within everything) NOT (contradicts perceivable everything for suggested nothing).
We are something much greater
You represent ONE expression of ALL existence aka the smallest ingredient within the whole base, which represents temporary potential (growth) within ongoing potentiality (loss). Resist the temptation to want the suggested greater and be the response-ability (choice) to the perceivable whole (balance); which in return grows your resistance as form (life) within flow (inception towards death).
we are only having an experience as a human being right now.
If the perceiving one within the perceivable all suggests it to be "only an experience"; then that represents outright denial of existing. In other words...what you perceive represent need; what others suggest represents want. You are now ignoring need for wanting more than everything offered...you chose this perspective.
it felt kind of comforting in a way
The only way for life represents being moved from inception towards death. Others tempt with suggested comforts so that you ignore that living represents the struggle to resist dying.
EN'ERGY, noun [Gr. work.] aka "Arbeit macht frei"...work (energy) will set you free (will of choice).
it could just be my mind trying to make myself feel better
Mind (Greek; memory)...it's for adaptation to perceivable inspiration (like a ram); not to accumulate suggested information (like a hard-drive). Falling for the latter tempts you to remember (respond to memory) suggested information; while ignoring perceivable inspiration. Such a memory filled with suggested information represents the "ego"...a self inflicted; portable temptation/ self justification for shirking response-ability trap.
Sleight of hand: "clean up your room; bucko" aka ROOM, noun - "place for reception or admission of any thing" aka your memory... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ctTdZUdu0O8
