I prefer the term soul as opposed to consciousness. Consciousness requires matter like a brain, or if you want to make the argument, whatever hardware is necessary for a sentient AI to have consciousness. A soul is how I would describe something that lives on past the physical world. Just my opinion.

Consciousness represents recipient; soul (spirit; spiro - "to breathe") represents adaptation of the recipient (perceiving) to the received (perceivable).

To be matter implies out of; within and in response to immaterial. As life (material) one cannot perceive ones inception/death (immaterial); because one exists as form (life) within the momentum (balance) of flow (inception towards death).
