There is a repeatable pattern - when Ukraine become out of western weapons and began to exhaust for whatever reason, Putin do some "illogic" step, like retreating or lowering activity on battlefield. Same happens from other side. Really, that is perfectly logical, if the real goal is not what propaganda of both sides told you, but continuation of war. Invasion works as expected. That is why Putin never did anything real against real "rivals" in that wargame and even against their top puppets in Ukraine.
However, this could quickly change if something will suddenly happen with Putin and few other NWO shills in Russia.

For the 8 years, people militia of Donbass hold positions under attack of fully equipped and perfectly supplied Ukrainian army that had much more weapons, air superiority, and all that stuff. Now you see complete nonsense on battlefield with powerful forces of Russian Army added to people militia. Even more - guess why there was a need for senseless referendums that was not needed at all nor for Russians in Ukraine, nor for Western "partners"? It was all about putting Donbass militia under the command of Russian NWO shills, because uncontrolled Donbass militia with access to Russian support could occasionaly began to do things that is not in the NWO plan - really destroy supply routes, seizing towns that was not allowed to seize, etc. And so on - for every inconsistency and weirdness you will find in that war, the only reasonable answer will be in the theory that this war is not what you think, but a NWO tool for their narratives.
