I imagine what needs done is some sort of protein digestion followed by a separation technique like electrophoresis. Or perhaps a specialized mass spec machine for larger molecules. The former sounds less expensive.

Or the case of Michael Brown where anti-cop people defend a lowlife robber who tried to grab a cop's gun while being arrested.
