I don't want to comment on "free" energy, but what about entropy on the material level? What if the power of using electricity to organize magnetic materials into magnets is far higher than that of conventional methods used to harness electrical energy? Figuring out a way to get the energy back out of the magnets (creating entropy within them in the process, thereby demagnetizing them over time) would then look miraculous to people not knowing what was going on.
