I remember the story from at least a decade ago. Spears got broken down past the point where she could be taken seriously and control her emotions and TMZ was dominating TV at the time and made everyone look batshit crazy. You're thinking about it from your framing. Their purpose is not conflict. With complete control, they can have that any time they would like. Think of Westworld. They could fight a slave, feel a rush, kill the slave, and walk away as the hero for that session. They could have any food, any man, woman, or child, or experience they'd like. Any hobby and fantasy you have would be magnified thousandfold if you were one of them. If you want to pretend you're a peasant once in a while like Marie Antoinette did, you can also do that.
