They do think they'll gain power. They just believe in different things to different extents. For example, Elon Musk believes in digital transhumanism but some kabballah practicioners may believe in the magic powers that affect the soul and make it something more powerful and truly immortal. Some may believe in both. Some may think none of that is real, but the power they get by joining is real. Money and control over people is immediate when they join the club.
That's the practical reason, but I believe many of them are truly religious. The ones that initiate the new members definitely know they have power over the new members, but they have their own rituals that they continue to practice.

Yeah, but you have more users, so forum sliding or karma whoring isn't as effective. The feds at TheDonald work in teams and shifts though and that's why they are somewhat effective. Now that their feds are here, we will likely see more of it because 3-12 posts in a row by the same user is not unusual here. It also makes it annoying to look for new quality content.
