Well if everything is circumstantial then your best bet is to line up a bunch of instances of people in the “elite” saying weird shit like this, collect them into a single post with a bunch of links and summaries of each, building an overarching thesis, then presenting it to us to chew on/discuss.

This idea is a big part of why the cultural revolution eviscerated all the monkhoods and monasteries that were everywhere in old china. By dedicating their life to the monkhood people were able to live with a far greater amount of “free time” leading to some miracles of inner development like those I’ve post about before. The locals would supply some leftover food to the monasteries to supplement what they could grow. The monks could then dedicate a large part of their time to assisting the locals in whatever ways needed, teaching, healing, protection, etc.

But if I had to give you a plausible answer I would say as a mass demoralization effort. Think about how many people invested their hopes in this guy, hundreds of millions if not over a billion around the world, and they just had the physical, moral, and psycho-spiritual-energetic rug pulled out from under them.
If {they} are into rituals surely this was a massive one. But until the 20th I remain optimistic. No matter what happens after that everyone is going to be doing some serious re-evaluations.

I think the idea of a supra-material “plant mind/spirit/consciousness” is really scratching the surface of something huge. It seems everyone who does very in depth research on (psychoactive, mainly) plants and fungi becomes convinced of their inherent intelligence or that they have some kind of lesson to convey. Also us trippy conspiracy theorists tend to come to similar conclusions through direct experience.
