It's not really that weird. If you're from an English speaking country, "Kiev" would be the correct spelling. "Kyiv" however is more close to how the Ukrainians pronounce it, so just consider it an upgrade. It's no different than maybe English speakers refers to the capital of my home country (Denmark) as "Copenhagen", whereas in reality, the name of it is "Kobenhavn", Brussels = Bruxelles etc.
