Think the early 2000's were good? You should have been around in the late 20th century. But part the problem with both was how naive and consumerist people were. As mentioned, the middle class wasted their money on material luxuries and instead of doing anything difficult to make the future better for their children they just followed the crowd and believed whatever the TV told them. People today aren't a lot better but at least they're less trusting of institutions and in some ways a worse economy has made them less materialist (and in other ways more selfish).
We are gradually moving closer to people being able to talk about changing society back to the way things were. Currently that discussion is mostly in terms of politics and economics, but to end the "dystopian Sci Fi horror" we have to get rid of the sci-fi part.
Yes, it was. Tolerance and diversity were still pushed as "virtues" while "racism" was vilified. Boys were taught that every time they succeeded, they were taking opportunities away from girls. Kids struggling with identity were told "Be Yourself". Every show and movie had this or that token character to show how "progressive" they were.
It was all there but at "tolerable",Liberal levels and everyone though it would just stay like that, not realizing that they were inside a process.
I asked God about this and the answer I got is that the covenant people are always getting better and the world people are always getting worse (up to a point we haven't reached yet). The tools that the righteous have for dealing with the problem and protecting themselves are ever more sufficient for the day. The blessed trajectory will outlast the Goddamned one.
That ain't using memory, but abusing it by holding onto and continuously reshaping fiction. Retaining fiction within memory puts one into feudal service to another.
insanity takes over society
One enters privately when taking part within society...so society takes over if privacy is given over.
As for insanity aka in (within) sanus (sound)...that implies each beings position within all of nature.
not willing to talk as a society
Free will of choice implies a privacy...choosing to join a society leaves privacy at the door. Society confines will within consensus.

People have the same line of thinking when the big stars of the show like Stalin or Hitler shown up. They regretted it.
Didn't switch timeliness. We're still on the same God-damned trajectory as ever.
It always feels like the past was better because everything's always getting worse.
The "moment it all changed" has more to do with your personal experience and how sheltered you were.
The plane was always spiraling toward the ground, you just happened to be born while it was right-side up.
This.

It's called having a rose tinted view of your childhood. Go back with a clear mind and you'll see there was little difference.
Do few shape the views of many to infect tint aka to taint by entertainment aka entering and tainting mind?
