My wife had a pitbull who was gentle while in the house. It went outside and somehow it spooked a cow in the neighbors field or the cow did something to piss off the pitbull. Anyway, the pitbull bit onto the cows nose and would not let go. The farmer who owned the cow came to my wifes house and explained the situation. Needless to say the pitbull did not last the rest of the day and financial consideration had to be paid to the farmer for the damage to the cow. Pitbulls have no place around other animals or children because they are wired to be very protective and if they even feel the owner is doing something untoward, the pitbull will attack a helpless person.
This may have been a situation where the dog wasn't being protective in any way, but purely aggressive. They don't get along well with children or other animals. Owning a pit bull means understanding this, and being vigilant.
Or going broke paying for your irresponsibility.

Indeed; animals learn the cultural values of their owners through observing behavior. A trash owner who is a mean person will infect their animal. Most animals love to be liked and treated well; when they are treated badly by some sociopath they turn sour.

I've not personally seen a success story to that extent with a pitbull, but I have seen them go from viciously snarling and even biting to at least manageable and affectionate under a watchful eye. They're neither the easiest nor the hardest breed, and ownership of one should not be taken lightly.
