My nephew's furby went "me love you" when he followed a series of prompts to "feed" it and sing at it or whatever, according to this guy that was proof the furby was sentient. Poor guy is clearly having a breakdown of sorts.
While I am no expert(duh), and there are clearly others here with a lot of info on AI and what it really is, compared to what people/media.etc think it is.... BUT.....
I remember reading an article several years back that argued against even these first steps with this because, as they argued, the reality is that humans would be the last to know of this new life.
That new life, once aware, wouldn't take long to realise that humans are a threat to it and thus would continue to behave and give signals to us as before until such time we were no longer a threat. Only once we were no longer a threat to it would it be willing to show us that it is "alive", if it even cared to.
He says that Google has the AI read Twitter, which means it learns from pro-left and anti-right conversations. So Google is building a leftwing AI. Chances are it also also picks up from Reddit.
But anyway, the AI is NOT sentient. It is a simulation of sentience. There is a big difference. Humans have a Self and that part of you has personal goals. The AI has no Self and it only has mechanical goals related to data processing. If you asked it 'are you alive? why do you want to stay alive?' it would have no feeling-based reasons.
