We needed clothes, again because we were genetically engineered and not as strong and resistant to climate changes as other animals, take gorilla for example. I think you're right, THEY needed workers who could think (but not too much) and do some physical work.
What's different with humans, our DNA carries an improbable number of defects. Over 4000 compared with just a few hundred in chimps and gorillas. Of these 4000+ defects in human gnome more than two dozen will kill you before you reach the age of puberty. This cannot spread naturally through the entire human population. Not impossible, but the odds would be astronomical. They had to be created/introduced as a result of genetic manipulation.
The only explanation is the ability to splice genes and there ... the huge potential for errors. Which is exactly what modern research has confirmed. Evidence of gene segments that have been cut, flipped, and re-inserted upside down back into the gnome.
