Worse than that! It assumes (and requires, for the calculation to provide meaningful output) that the earth is a sphere to begin with!
It is often misrepresented as a "proof the world is spherical", but how could you ever prove the world was spherical by merely assuming it was true? Eratosthenes was raised to believe the world was spherical from childhood, just like us today. He never doubted it or sought to prove it in any way.
Actually, there are MANY reasons the eratosthenes "experiment" is not an experiment.

Answers are easy. That's the purpose of virtually all mythology. What matters is if the answer is correct! There are answers available while assuming a flat earth worldview - however, it doesn't change the fact that attempting to determine the shape of what you are standing on by studying the complete opposite direction of it is both unscientific and incredibly stupid. Mm, not really. The flat earth idea has a LOT of holes that, when ask, nobody seems to be able to explain. If I do get an explanation, it more often does not match an explanation given by another flat earth idea supporter.
I have asked a lot of questions about earth as a globe when I was a student, and learned a lot about why they say things are a certain way.
I agree that those people who stifle conversation are assholes. I don't think I've met a flat earth believer though who didn't stifle the conversation. Not yet at least :)
Actually, I think I would know a lot more than you about globe earth, space, etc and about geocentric observations....and the holes are in the globe theory. The flat earth is not a theory, it's what you observe when you look at the horizon and do the math. It's really hard to understand that you believe and I observe when you probably rely on space photos and video to justify your certainty. Hard to believe when you believe so hard.
It's scientific method, math, reasoning, logic. But we've all been programmed to look the other way. The solor system and the earth being round didn't enter the US education system until the 1950s. Before that, it was only scholors that constantly argued about it. And the arguments, like Airley's failure have long since been wiped out from public view.
if you want to learn, choose a "flat earth proof" that you don't get and ask me what you're missing.
Also, you should understand that I cannot answer questions that are unknowable. Like what is beyond the ice wall. Or, since the sun is small and local, how does it work. I can disprove their theories about globe and space, but that doesn't mean I somehow know how we got here, where we actually are, etc.

There are many "proofs" available - no matter what shape you think the earth is - but most people don't know them. Like you, they erroneously point to eratosthenes (and columbus) - neither of which ever proved or sought to prove anything about the shape of the earth.
