Well, the tapes were not made to last forever, so they digitized them. If they didn't, they would say "you didn't digitize the tapes, now they're unreadable!"

What you do lose is people with archaic technical skills, even if there isn't a lot of reel to reel tape readers around. For example, there are very few people who can build grand buildings like Notre Dame with wood, but plenty who can throw up a metal WalMart building.
They have the money, that they they are spending on other things. Government budgeting.
