Well, the tapes were not made to last forever, so they digitized them. If they didn't, they would say "you didn't digitize the tapes, now they're unreadable!"
My late uncle worked at the skunk works and when I ask him if he thinks we went to the moon his reply was "We don't lose technology". He would not elaborate further and didn't want to talk about it. He also said area 51 is filled with disinformation and nobody will ever really know what is real and what is disinformation unless they are there
What you do lose is people with archaic technical skills, even if there isn't a lot of reel to reel tape readers around. For example, there are very few people who can build grand buildings like Notre Dame with wood, but plenty who can throw up a metal WalMart building.
I work construction and modern construction is designed around low cost, rapid completion with unskilled labor. It's much more efficient, but definitely not sustainable
