In my experience, electromagnetism is mostly invisible and intangible, except for the narrow band of visible light we can see. Those look like some kind of high pressure waves (waves of denser air) that is distorting the light passing through them. I don't know how they could be caused or if it's natural or man-made.

They're starting to figure out that the upper atmosphere acts a bit like the surface of the ocean. There's waves that occur between the barrier is stratosphere and mesosphere. I think this is an example of the rare occasion where the transition is visible.
Saw one of these in northern California a few months ago, alongside a couple other people.
