In my experience, most sociopaths rely on using insults to rattle their opponents. The secret in dealing with them is always just let it bounce off with no effect. Insulting them back has no real effect since they don't let it reach their core, which is psycho anyway.
I think so, people who are either very stupid or very sure of themselves or who care very little for others (and there is some significant overlap there) see no issues with meaningless insults because they are incapable of understanding another's point of view.
