Since nobody interested in digging out that rabbit hole, I just lurked a little, and that's what I found:
https://whois.ipip.net/AS14593
Starlink have autonomous system with ID AS14593. This AS have only 206,080 IPv4 adresses that is too low for woldwide provider.
On "Graph v4" tab you could research direct connections AS14593 have with other AS'es. On "Upstreams" tab you could find upstreams of Starlink, i.e. channels Statlink use to connect to internet.
Mostly it connected to usual backbone providers and IXes, but there is some random networks I found interesting on the quick view.
- AS46997 NATOLAB - Black Mesa Corporation, US
- AS11164 INTERNET2-I2PX - Internet2, US
- AS14630 INVESCO - Invesco Group Services, Inc., US
- AS1798 OREGON - State of Oregon, US
- AS2152 CSUNET-NW - California State University, Office of the Chancellor, US
- AS207841 INFERNO - Inferno Communications Ltd, GB (some here will be enjoyed by that name)
- AS34019 HIVANE, FR (suspicious because it is a very small murky non-profit network with direct connection to Starlink AS)
- AS293 ESNET, US
You could continue that digging if interested. There are other tabs you could explore. There are tons of info you could find interesting.
SpaceX also have AS27277 autonomous system - http://whois.ipip.net/AS27277
Fascinating thank you. Does this forum have a consensus on Elon Musk?
No thanks, it is just what on the surface, available for anyone who is a little curious.
As for consensus - science, and conspiracy theories are scientific thing in a nutshell, was never about consensus. It is about finding truth, whatever it is. Even if there was only one person who was eventually right. When this forum will fall to following some consensus, it will mean that this forum is completely failed.
I don't know about any consensus but my general rule is to never trust anyone that rich and famous. IMO Musk is a front for the government/israel. He is buddies with Ari Emanuel and Rupert Murdoch. All of Musk projects should have failed without government subsidies and support.
He is basically doing what the government wants done but making it "cool".
The most successful african american is white
I remind my black coworkers of this just to piss them off
Also this guy here has some good work on Musk useless projects: https://www.youtube.com/@commonsenseskeptic
BLACK MESA IS REAL!? WE MUST SAVE THE FREEMAN!
Lol came here to also post this
the right man in the wrong place can make all the difference... in the world...
so wake mr freeman... wake up.. and smell the ashes...
IPv6 is a bird without wings. It failed, and hardly will become something more than supplement to IPv4.
IDK. 20M users worldwide by $100 is $2B per month or $24B per year. 4 year to cover that $100B spent. If satellites could last at least 5 years, than it is even profitable. Not that bad. Of course if it could sustain 20M users.
Domains that registered within that AS.
I'm afraid you will need to carry a car battery to have any decent working time for the phone constantly using sat network. Square of distance, remember?
I don't know answer too. May be some clue could be found in one of that upstreams in the list?
Then it looks overengineered. You could transmit that tiny bits of control info even inside GPS signal or through something like ORBCOMM. Applying permissions is one-way thing, and there is always will be some ground cellular network nearby and within at most few hours of time, if phone commanded to send some data to BigBrother.
Hardly there is exist a task where they need two-way realtime communication in the regions without cellular network. Not many people live in such places today and hardly they use latest phones.
Well, he has to work with the govt and military in order to have gone forward with Starlink. Does the good outweigh the bad?
You tell me, I have no idea. It is cheaper here to just throw fiber to the cabin in the woods than to pay insane $500 for Starlink terminal, Teslas do not hold charge in winter and there are no charging stations every mile, so they are no more than summer toys for rich people, Musk don't build his metro here and nobody try to implant chips into brains.
Model 3 is the best off grid sedan as solar can power it and basically no maintenance. Eventually the cybertruck will take the truck version of best off grid "truck".
Starlink enables remote work in off grid locations where internet isn't available.
He's bringing awareness of corruption.
I'm a fan.
Do you understand that 50 sunny days a year is a death sentence for any solar crap?
Did you ever tried to turn on a Tesla when it spent a week at -20°C? It is completely dead. And with high probability it lost half of capacity forever, if battery survived at all.
Remind me, what is the price for new Tesla "fuel tank"?
Holy shit, you are completely not aware about real world. Teslas are expensive and useless toys, nothing more.
May be only on ships in open sea or somewhere in really distant places like mountains or tundra. In any other case few kilometers of fiber is much cheaper and much more reliable.
Since when does off grid require -20 degree weather? Sounds horrible
How long would it take to charge by solar?
Depends how many panels you have
CGNAT
Thats what greedy providers use who want to save few fucking cents creating a lot of problems even for regular users. Don't use providers who too greedy to give you white IP. They greedy in other things too.
As for Musk, looks like greedy person will not shoot thousands of satellites to the orbit. I don't think he have only 200k IPs because he is greedy.
Also, NAT have a limitation too. Today even browsing a single average web 2.0 page establish dozens of connections. Things are musch worse if yser have multiple internet connected devices at home. Each connection will use a port on white IP. There are total of 65536 ports, so if a single user establish a 60 connection you are limited to 1000 NAT'ed users on one white IP address. In practice, more than 100 users on a single IP today is a direct road to connection problems and so user complaints. IPv6 supposed to resolve that problems, but it is still in early stages and looks like will never kick IPv4 as expected. Good enough to use some google, but not enough even for messenger phone call. World is far from full IPv6 adoption.
Eh... thats not quite true... for starters you still get both TCP and UDP... but 1000 is still 200 million users... 100 is 20 million... IPV6 probably still a pipe dream for a while but eventually it is capable.... as long there is enough memory and processing ability you can theoretically have millions of processes per device behind the NAT though... 2^96 theoretical maybe? Probably would never have enough memory for that though lol.
I doubt he cares as long as its gonna be profitable at that amount, they will have to figure out making sure the satellites can actually carry that much load too before they worry about billions of users.
UDP is ostracized now, and NAT is much worse for UDP than for TCP since it is stateless protocol.
And yes, satellite load could be a problem too.
IDK, may be you are right, and Musk just do not run ahead of locomotive.
Not sure what you mean by UDP being ostracized... I use it for all kinds of stuff if it's applicable. Its way faster... time will tell though thats the bottom line. I was very skeptical of it at first given the spectacular dumpster fire that all other satellite ISPs are...
I use it heavily too. It is faster and more versatile. But most internet trafic today is TCP and even VPNs do not make things better for UDP, most use TCP for VPN too.
Black Mesa Corporation, US is that the one in New Mexico?
Great post BTW!! This needs to be pinned. One of the very few and rare true investigative works here!
I don't know. Quick search show only references to some fictional organization from Half-Life computer game. That is why I accounted it as interesting.
Probably you have some official US business online catalogues where you could find registration data for US company by name. I just don't know where to look for such online services.
Also check another companies in "upstreams" tab, may be there will be more weird stuff I'm not aware about.
I thought you played Half-Life. As soon as I saw Black Mesa I was like is this for real!!
I don't know if they used the Black Mesa corp name just to troll us or if the game actually referenced some real world org. Even if we find the address of any companies they will probably be just other fronts I am pretty sure they cover their public tracks. Still worth looking into though.
I'm not a gamer, but of course I'm aware of Half-Life and its lore. :) However I thought that I'll find some real US business with that name but failed. That is why it attracted my attention.
Look, it is a perfect way to hide a real murky organization if you name it exactly like some fictional organization from some popular movie or game. Even if somebody will have question, all he would find is tons of references to game/movie. Or they even even create and push some blockbuster to hide already existing organization if they will need to hide it. Who knows how many entertainment franchises was created with that purpose?
Seems to be an ISP?

However, it is not clear why Starlink have an upstrem connection to them.
May be they just have one of Starlink ground stations on their property connected through their network, or may be they are something else, or may be Musk like to have an upstream connections of Starlink to the students campus clubs.
