Don't do it. It's constantly in the news as an issue in heat waves, or cold snaps. They decide the temperature while you suffer.

Some people only see that tiny discount, and think the things they've been warned about would never happen to them.

Most people don’t know how to properly use a thermostat and will impulsively lower or raise temperatures.

It’s pretty easy to understand the utilities motive here.

You think the people at the utility have an agenda to control your room temperature? What would the improper motive be?

This is just retarded paranoia.

Instead of "things we already suspected for 500" I think you mean DAILY DOUBLE.

In parts of Europe, setting your thermostat too high is now a crime.

A few years back, Adam Curry on the No Agenda Show was messing around with a Raspberry Pi-hole. He happened to notice that every time someone just walked in front of his Nest thermostat, he could see the burst of traffic trying to make it's way back to SkyNet.

What was the traffic?

I don't recall he looked into it any further. It turns out that Nest Thermostats include both proximity and motion sensors: Sensors in Google Nest devices.

I doubt one in 100 people with these devices realize that fact, and far fewer than that know it's all "phoned home". I suspect it's a bare handful are consciously aware that: "Google knows if you're home, and is watching and listening to you right now." Even if you don't consider it dangerous in any way, it's creepy as hell.

You think your electricity consumption is sensitive information?

How the fuck do you think you get billed every month? Where do you think your electricity comes from???

This just makes it easier for them to do their job.

You should be worried about actual surveillance.

Unless your using your own infrastructure and producing your own electricity, then this is not your data at all.

It’s like getting mad at the gas company for wanting a gas meter that uses gsm communication to let them know when you need a refill.

How DARE the gas company STEAL YOUR data!!!!!

Bunch of fucking morons on here apparently.

The police want to know everybody's electricity usage.

For one thing, it identifies people who might be running grow lamps. Then they can see what it is they are growing.

They have other ways of doing this.

What’s that got to do with a smart meter?

They can do the same thing with a regular meter you fucking imbecile lol.

Seriously, you’re all a bunch of fucking morons…

Don't listen to u/iknowitsu

The police can park a helicopter over a house and scan infrared to see if the grow operation is producing a heat signature that they can get a search warrant on. What about people working out of apartments where it's unclear which tenant is responsible? How does a regular meter show the hours the electricity is being used and by what amounts at all hours day and night over a long duration? How do the police read everybody's meters?

That account is a deliberate time waster and should have been banned a long time ago.

Police don’t even give a fuck about weed…

the fuck is wrong with you morons?

You want me banned because I don’t mindlessly eat your bullshit up like they do.

And I have no respect for stupid people.

Anyway, the police wanting to see what you do in your home by way of smart devices is unconstitutional.

First of all, it’s the utilities that have access to your smart meter data.

This literally saves the meter runner a trip by your house.

That’s how most old meters worked. They sent out a local chirp that the utility picks up as they drive by.

Smart meters are just better technology and your energy consumption is not personal information. It’s measuring your consumption of a good that someone else is producing and has agreed to sell to you.

This thread literally hurts my brain… yall are a bunch of fckin clowns.

Nobody is arguing that the energy company should not know how much electricity you buy. This is merely a small part of a complete picture the police could create of your day to day activities measurable through smart devices. Many of those things are services for which you have paid. It is private information; the government harvesting that data to prosecute people violates the U.S. Constitution.

The reason this should be important to the people who frequent this forum is that criminal investigation is being weaponized. The targets include people who speak out against approved narratives.
