I am okay with keeping barbarians and terrorists out. Pretty simple. You don't want those people in. Not only are they illegal criminals, likely up to no good, they terrorise civilization. Bribing sentries sometimes works. But generally speaking, the wall when defended, because it is defenses, keeps people out, because any sentries are prepared to shoot trespassers. Otherwise there's no real point in having a wall people can climb over.
