The first step was, one day it occurred to me that I really, truly don’t know what happens after death, so reincarnation is no more or less likely than any other ideas I grew up with.
Then, as my intuition improved, and I got better at recognizing intuitive “hits” about things, there would be some people I felt a past life connection to. Like, this person is my friend, but it also feels like he’s my overbearing father. I can’t know for sure about these things, but I make a note of them.
And then once I had an OBE that morphed into a dream where my brother and I were poor, we broke into a house to rob it, and I watched the owner kill him.
Oddly enough, my mom used to tell me that when I was a baby, she was always afraid I would die. Between me and my brother, she thinks of me as “the one she didn’t kill.”
I Highly recommend the book Many Lives, Many Masters. Other books by him are good from what i hear. It confirms what you are experiencing and your prior lives.
Not that I recall. I did have an interesting experience when I was 5. I was out running around the neighborhood by myself which was something a 5 year old could do in small town America at the time. I suddenly saw what looked like a tunnel or portal in this wooded lot. It was about 2 1/2 feet in diameter and looking up the tunnel it appeared pink and white and sort of "fleshy". I was overcome with the feeling that I shouldn't enter it and ran home. After about an hour I went back and it was gone.
Didn't relate that experience to a single soul until adulthood even though I wondered if my parents would know what it was. I would just get overwhelmed with a dark sense of foreboding if I thought about telling someone. Even as an adult I would enter a very depressive state during the handful of times I shared the experience.
There was a post on mysteriousuniverse.com that was similar to this. A hunter went through some kind of portal. Things changed from being night and cold in a forest to balmy tropical daytime. He managed to back out the way he came.
I think you made the right call not going through.

Paying attention is the first right step. Like Galadriel's mirror, what is shown to you need not happen. There are local and global civilizational collapses in our past that were witnessed by some who still remember today. This is not that, though it is like that. We choose life every day and our destiny is not collapse.
Of course I say Jesus is the answer but if you're not ready to hear that recognize that truth is the answer and will triumph. What the real you will go through is chosen at least 51% by yourself. Don't delegate that choice to any but your Creator.

Because you are not citizens of a country, but rather citizens of the Kingdom of God, you never truly fit in. Your values clash with modernism. You care more about the right thing more than being right. You recognize evil and can't help but to fight against it.
You have an intolerance for lies and deception. And for unnecessary human suffering. You hate evil, hypocrisy, and liars. And at times, you even hate the world. You do the right thing for the sake of doing the right thing. You are willing to suffer for the truth. You are willing to be outcasts because you're incapable of endorsing lies.
The west is ruled by the spirit of nihilism. Which is why acknowledging the truth is so dangerous to rulers of this world. The rulers of this world built an empire of lies because the simplest of truths would destroy it. The only way to conquer evil is through love. This world got evil because we all fell short in loving each other. We divided ourselves by ideology and physical appearance. These walls we ourselves allowed to be erected need deconstructed.
If we had loved each other properly, evil people would not be in power and destroying our world. Those who can not love can not be trusted to make ethical decisions. And that is our fault. But we have the power to fix this. We have the power to avoid making the same genocidal mistakes of past generations. Let us make love the highest virtue and do everything we can to manifest and empower the spirit of love.
