I suspect this is only a small aspect of something bigger, do you think a game developer will be as motivated to work as diligently as before? Sure, fear of starvation/homelessness is motivating but it doesn't make for a creative environment. Before 2020 a game developer had a vacation to look forward to and many other aspirations. All that said, there is an effect of over complication and over inter-dependencies that has been going for a while. In a technological society, as time progress, everything becomes more and more complicated and more and more interconnected, this means things are easier to break, there are many dependencies, lose few people here and there, or few suppliers and the whole things come apart. It becomes harder and harder to make an elegant product.
