As I learned from Sandy Hook investigations, non-medical professionals can only pronounce someone dead under 1 of 3 readily identifiable conditions:
Ex-sanguination (completely blood drained)
Decomposition of the corpse exposing skeleton
Decapitation
How does a non-medical professional know if a corpse's blood is completely drained?

Medical urgency and location are also factors but less so than other organs, as the kidney can remain viable outside the body for 24-36 hours under the proper conditions.
