Here's a hint: it does not say that entire nations will be wiped off the earth by 2000.

It says there will be massive environmental disasters up to and possibly including entire nations being wiped from the earth. That is the entire subject of the paragraph. You have to take the whole paragraph in context. One word does not change that, it clarifies it.
