Even if so, you obviously don't need things with enormous soundprofing properties, but very vulnerable to moisture to cover tunnel entrance, unless something very loud happens inside tunnel and you desperately want to deafen it.
Idea of using matresses to cover tunnel entrance will rise even more suspicions, than having matresses inside tunnel.

I can't say anything about topic at all, since there is just not enough data from US on that topic.
Only thing I could be somehow shure about, that secret tunnels under sinagogues is not a rare thing. There was a scandal in 90s in Moscow, when secret tunnel was found from central sinagogue to a yard of nearby multistore apartment building cluster. Then other tunnels was found under other sinagogues in other towns. Story was quickly shut down by MSM, and it was unclear what this tunnels was used for. Tunnels was not ancient and was found out that was built relatively recently, not earlier than 70s, so excuse that this tunnels was there from the very beginning didn't work for Jews.

As for assumption that NY tunnel was used by Jews for some rithuals looks too stretched. I think Jews in NY don't need secret tunnels for that, they will be perfectly fine even if they will eat babies alive in the most expensive NY resataunt or on White House lawn. MSM will just declare it some fine art performance or live art installation to attract attention to suffering of Jewish people. So, Jews hardly need this tunnel stuff for their rithuals or whatever.
