It's theorized that an earlier version of us figured out interstellar/interdimensional travel and the timing of the cycle of cataclysm and were able to make it off world before cataclysm hit control/alt/delete on them again.
I think each of us has a "home" planet. For some, it actually is Earth.

And no I dont think this is some leftover vestigial thing, I think its part of our creators that they spliced into us to speed up the process. Just like those old sumerian legends. In native american legends, people like quezecoatl and the hunter master from the coso rock range, are described as feathered serpents or bird like. In mesopotamia, humans were not allowed to depict the gods true form.
We were created in gods image, I have very little doubt about that. I always found it awfully curious that the very beginning of the bible starts with saying man was created in OUR image. Most religious people will tell you they mean the holy trinity or something. But I think this is one of the few parts that was translated correctly over millennia.
