You guys should take the philosophy of farmers. Farmers have to put down animals all the time. If a fox gets inside your fence line where your chickens are you must put it down. If a sheep jumps the fence you must put it down or else risk all the other sheep following that first one that jumped the fence.
When you have a diseased animal on your farm you put it down so that disease does not spread to entire herd / flock.
