Im not a electrical engineer, so I cant vouch for this information.
But I suspect there is some truth to this. In nova scotia, there is one power company its a monopoly and a criminal run one as well. They replaced everyones meters with smart meters about 10 years ago, then went through and replaced them AGAIN about 5 years later. At least the one where I lived was changed out twice in the span of 5 years.
When I brought this up in r/novascotia, they of course thought I was being delusional. Ive seen a few posts pop up asking why their energy bills started going up after getting a new smart meter installed. Just concidence...

Thanks for this info. --- And this confounded Electric company Overrode Doctor instructions that we can NOT have that damn "smart"-meter, & have since been pushing & passing out FREE Led-bulbs like they are 'candy'.
Fortunately we became wise to any 1 "gift"ing us anything, outside our circle of family & friends. That also includes the Internet. You would not believe what people calling self a HOLY-christian on social media will do to you, as I found out here. We live in a deeply-dark world.
As if it isn't on purpose. Officially, residential users aren't charged for power factor but if they make the meters measure apparent power secretly, that's that much more profit for them
So when the ban for incandescent passed I actually went out and bought the incandescent bulbs and switched every light in my house from LED to incandescent and to my surprise my electric bill came and it was $154 cheaper....🤔 They tell us that everyone using LEDs will save Americans tons of money but perhaps it is meant to cost us more....
