Watching this scene where he's getting powdered.. I'm there.. what the fuck is going up with that.
why would they put powder in wigs
"People who wore them were among the "elites" in society. The first wigs were made from goat and horse hair, and because they were never properly washed they smelled quite terrible, and tended to attract lice. To combat the unfortunate odor and unwanted parasites, the wig-wearer would "powder" his wig."
Like why would you need any of this shit. Then I was thinking.. just those fuckin outfits with those knicker-bocker socks. These guys were all dressed like fruitcakes. Something going on here with that. I don't think they dress like that these days. Well, why, right.
Someone said just the other day that every little part of what they wore had a very common reason behind it. They explained five or six of the things, but not the wigs. But I’m sure it was a valid reason to them at the time.
iv read that it was because they all shaved there heads cus they were covered in lice. Believe it or not but most noble familys were fucking disgusting pigs with terrible hygiene. One of the signs that someone was of nobility was black rotten teeth. They were the only ones who could afford sugar.
castles could also get pretty nasty.
human history is a filthy story.
The wigs hid the ravages of syphillis and also the wigs + powder reduced/prevented lice.
That's like this shakespeare stuff the other day.. I'm there.. what's these collar things. Ruff collar. Look up those.. they can get outta hand. They started to get pretty stupid with these things. Who wears those now.. I think, fuckin clowns and jokers.
alot of the layers were due to everybody smelling like armpits and assholes, then, as humans are wont to do, they started turning the extra fashion into fashion statements.
considering our era's fashion statements includes guys chopping their dicks off and turning bowel parts into vaginas, i'm not inclined to judge any bygone age's weirdness.
This is a dumb anachronistic take.
Stature. The bigger the wig and the fancier the clothes - the higher the stature.
I don't support this way of showing stature, but that was the way in the 15th to 18th century. Some still use them to this day.
