These NPCs seem to have a level of consciousness similar in nature to animals. That is, an animal can have a very high instinct for self-preservation, but can any animal be said to have a concept of genocide?
Finally, I feel there there probably is a relationship between what we call "consciousness" and what we call the "soul". What that may be I cannot yet say with any certainty. (And I must add that, frankly, I find it the opposite of helpful when people assert their speculations in this area as fact.)
