Have you made it episode 1000? It was a long journey but well worth it. I'd probably call one piece one of the greatest stories of all time. Not just any series can go for decades like they did with a long continuous story.
The guy checking his phone has been confirmed as one of the deceased teachers husband. She was trying to reach him, that is why he was looking at his phone. She apparently sent a text or somehow called him and told him she had been shot and was dying. This man was obviously in shock. Once he informed others what was going on, they took his gun and restrained him from going back into the school.
