When Swiss citizen released from obligatory military service he took the machine gun and uniform he had during service and take it home. And have to keep them until pension age. After that, if a citizen wish, he could exchange machine gun to the rifle. When I visited Switzerland, local fellows told me that it is relatively popular to spend holydays on the rural shooting ranges with own guns.
That is why Switzerland have one of the biggest army in the world.
Police with machine guns is not a rare thing in Switzerland too. You will rarely see them on the streets, but if you do, with some probability they will be with some serious weapons.
