Sure, fear of starvation/homelessness is motivating but it doesn't make for a creative environment. Before 2020 a game developer had a vacation to look forward to and many other aspirations. In a technological society, as time progress, everything becomes more and more complicated and more and more interconnected, this means things are easier to break, there are many dependencies, lose few people here and there, or few suppliers and the whole things come apart. Storytelling has no incentive in big companies to make anything but highly consumerist games designs to extract money because the shear size of their enterprise is so large it requires constant feeding and they are inefficient and usually beholden to shareholder decisions which have nothing to do with the games.
Games are getting too expensive to produce so cheaper and cheaper talent is also being used to fill the gaps where possible.
