As a random thought - in 70s they made some agreement with their masters or some higher power to do something in 50 years in exchange to their wealth and power over people of Earth. They started a lot of projects and now the deadline is near but nearly nothing is completed.
I can't tell that agreement was with evil, it could be opposite, say they had to prove that they are deserve their power. But being greedy and corrupted they completely pervert the goal.
Say they had to prove that they care about planet and people, but since they are dumb, greedy perverts, they spent time making a show of solving non-existing problems they think out just to gain more wealth and power. And of course falling into all sins you could imagine including satanism and other crap, believing that it will help them to fool that higher power.
And facing deadline they just try to do all that useless crap with enormous zeal and hurry. That is why they don't hide anymore and we have a chance to see their real face with all that perversions, satanism and stupid and useless "care" about planet and people.
It's a power grab of the most desperate sort. It is not about winning, it is about stealing as much as you can in the shortest amount of time. Nothing intricate or complex, just chaos and anarchy. Someone just likes to watch the world burn.

There's nothing standing in their way nor any major challenges ahead of them, and it takes the WHO a single declaration before 4 billion will perish in a single decade.
