Why do we say that to each other? It means absolutely nothing.

It's the perfect greeting. You are telling them to have a good morning, they have no choice in the matter.

The worst is asking someone, how they are? That leaves you open to hear all kinds of crap that is wrong in their life. I don't have the patience for that in the morning.

Well, "have a good morning" makes more sense than "good morning" by itself. What would make even more sense is, "I wish you a good morning."

It's first thing in the morning and this guy expects to be greeted in full sentences.

Who does he think he is, The King of Siam, or something?

It's nicer than saying "I hate your fucking guts" to acknowledge your presence.

What if it's not a frickin good morning? Why should I be forced to say "Good Morning" back? Why not say "Hi?" I'll tell you one thing: When I'm not at work and having to be polite with customers, I never say "Good Morning" back. I tell them I'm off the clock.

I think you are misunderstanding. People say good morning as in “have a good morning”. I truly want my neighbors to have a good morning every morning forever to keep them from becoming depressed maniacs who might wind up driving their car thru some ones garage -potentially mine- one day.

Interesting. I've thought about it too. In some languages and cultures, you have greetings that have some meaning. In Korean, you have a peace greeting with variations as the main one and some other functional ones. Arabic has a peace greeting too, from what I hear. There must be other languages that have more function in what they say which is more reason.
