If they're brigading 4chan they must really be desperate.
/pol/ (and 4chan generally) tend to be upstream of the rest of the Internet. Meaning that things that spread all over the internet tend to get started on 4chan, specifically /pol/. Many interest groups have noticed this.
Also, reddit is extremely botted and shilled as well, but you get banned for calling them out there, while people on /pol/ will not hesitate to call out a shill or a bot. So it's more noticed there.
They seem to be paid shills, if not bots. I've noticed it drops off late at night (US time).
I think someone was being clever.
