My statistics teacher made me read that in college, it's a good book. Basically, it shows you how politicians and the media lie with statistics, and how to spot their lies. That said, it can be a sort of "how to", but don't blame the author who tried to do a good thing.

It also came up in Intellectuals and Society by Thomas Sowell (or maybe it was Basic Economics?).

He cited two conflicting news stories about what seemed to be the same economic trend; then proceeded to break them down and reveal how both were accurate about their own facts but wrong about their conclusions.

Upon closer inspection, those books have zero wear on them.

  1. No shelf wear on the bottom (scuffing at the bottom of the hardcovers), no dog-eared pages (though most people do that on the top;

  2. the books lie perfectly flat indicating do dog earing - no scuffing of the dust jacked on the bottom spine from being picked up and put down;

  3. on the softcover books, no lines from being opened too far for the binding.

  4. The top book has no scratches on the gloss cover, it gleams smoothly in the light.

My conclusion, Gates paid a staffer to go buy a bunch of books that would make him look smart if he had actually read them, but he hasn't read them. He has people he pays to do that for him, and tell him what the conclusions are.

I'm pretty sure they're leftist decorations, like a nice vase with flowers.

That smirk and those eyes - that's the demon inside him laughing as it pulls his strings while his shrunken, shriveled soul cowers in the corner of his own mind.

Tried to de-amp the shit. Maybe it works.

Anywho, 10 billion investment to 200 billion of assets. Yeah, you're right.

I'm honestly puzzled by that picture. I can see it messaging that he wants to lie with statistics, but I could also see it messaging that he has it for the opposite motivation to try not to lie about them...

Either way if I were his photographer I'd say "...are you sure you want that book in the picture?" ... and then I'd say "Can I get a free license for Windows and Office 365?"

Here is the video where he mentions it on his summer reading list:

Lots more going on in that stack.

Richard Dawkins - a militant atheist who believes in ridiculing Christians instead of engaging in dialog.

Randall Munroe - author of xkcd, the OG in the internet pseudo-intellectual "I fucking love science" chicanery. Also sneaks covert atheism and leftism in under thr guise of humor.

Should We Eat Meat - haven't read it, but likely takes one of two tacs: 1. Humans are equal to animals and thus should not be eaten. This denigrated humanity by robbing them of their special status before God. Or 2. The old Malthusian lie that the planet can not support our population so we need to eat the bugs.

Don't recognize the other three, but On Immunity seems ominous given what he's doing right now.

Same about Randall. But xkcd has been getting less smart and more "Look at me! I'm smart!" recently, imo

If I’m not mistaken it’s the polar opposite of the pallid transginger.
