Now they expect us to believe that a helicopter would work on a planet with an atmosphere 100 times less dense than Earth's. Foxnews link. (www.foxnews.com)

The atmosphere is less dense but gravity is also much lower. Calculations done on the conditions mars have actually indicate that human powered flight (strapping fake wings on and attempting to be a bird) would actually work on mars because of its low gravity. That being the case there's nothing unbelievable about a helicopter working on mars as well and if you wish to prove otherwise than I would certainly be interested in a post containing all the relevant calculations done in regards to the gravity and aerodynamics of mars to see whether a helicopter would actually be able to fly there.

With a gravity a third of that on Earth, I get that you could jump very high but you would still come down while flapping your arms. With such a small amount of air there wouldn't be enough high to low pressure differential on your wings to cause lift in an atmosphere 144 times less dense than on Earth.

Is that just your intuition or have you attempted to crunch any numbers?

Numbers are racist sexist artificial constructs, so he didn’t bother with them.

Have not put any numbers together yet, but that could be a long process looking into drag, buoyancy, and pressure differentials in a ultra low pressure environment.

What generates lift in a helicopter?

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 1 ▼
– DavidColeIntrepid 1 point 4 years ago +2 / -1

Airfoils. The fact that the pressure underneath the blades is more dense than on top, thus generating lift.

It's low density, not space helicopters. This isn't an L ron hubbard meth induced sci fi story.

Belief. For example, the paid shill OP believes that planes work on Earth, so they do. But he doesn’t believe they could ever work anywhere else (he doesn’t believe that anywhere else even exists), so they don’t anywhere else.

It’s very simple, really.

Lets follow the money. Since I am accused of being paid, I wonder who would be paying me. Would it be Russia, China, or some other entity that would fork over money to have me call this news article bogus? I am legitimately curious who you think is paying me for this.

Even though the atmosphere is 144 times less dense than Earth's, the blades only need to spin 5 times faster than a normal drone, to achieve the same results. Not buying it.

▲ 2 ▼
– Tyrant597 2 points 4 years ago +4 / -2

Or maybe they just increased the pitch angle of the blades to catch more air...

Not much air to catch, 144 times less atmospheric pressure than on Earth.

increase lift by increasing the size of the rotors + gravity is significantly weaker = you are too stoopid to understand physics.

Would not be challenging to disprove. An HVAC vacuum pump. Thick plexi glass chamber, A drone redone to spin the blades, 7 times faster.

The only problem is the gravity variable. Not sure what would need to be done to compensate for that. Would adding 3 times as much air be an apples to apples workaround for the math or would that just compund the problem? Can really go down a rabbit hole with replicating things. (Edit: three times the air on mars, not earth.)

I think the footage is real and the lie is how thin the air is. If you go look at things like Popular Mecanics magazine from the late 40s and 50s they were predicting man exploring Mars with just oxygen masks like climbers on tall mountains, not full NASA space suits. That was with the best knowledge available before the Brookings report was issued .What better way to slow down space exploration (Which would make mankind more spread out and harder to control) than make it 100 times harder than reality?

Want to see something that will really make you go "those bastards are lying to us!" ? Look up a picture of the curiosity lander not the rover and adjust the RBG until the cables are the same shade of yellow they are in pictures from before the launch.

The article mentioned how this could be used to now use drones in low atmospheric areas like the mountains. Seems ass backwards to make a Mars helicopter THEN apply the tech to Earth.

After reading all of the comments I have come to the conclusion that you all need to relax and smoke a joint, hit a bong, or do a dab.

Puff, puff, pass.

Relax, take a deep breath and realize it doesn't really matter.

Cannabis is not a narcotic. It is a plant and when set on fire it has certain effects.

Apparently they get worse than worked up. Ego tripping.

Conspiracy theorists arguing with conspiracy theorist. Is there a conspiracy behind this?

Makes for some entertainment!

Couldn't the same be said for opium, it's just a plant that is smoked. I have nothing against recreational drug use, just very against using any subtances (including pharmaceuticals) to cope with anxiety.

No stress or anxiety issues here. I simply partake because I like to.

When I first met my wife of 25 years she told me that I was so laid back to the point of being horizontal. So I asked her if she wanted to get horizontal with me.
