As to why it was allowed to happen I don't know. But I do believe POTUS knew this was a possibility, and I base that on the video he released asking people to go home. I think it was pre-recorded. I swear it's sunny in his video but it was an overcast day. Also it's quiet in the background despite chaos unfolding in DC (so sounds of sirens, people, etc).

You hit the nail on the head. I remember that blond legislator in Georgia posing an actual legitimate thought in the midst of her freaking out. It was something along the lines of: "If any of this is true, then are we saying we weren't elected legitimately too!?".
