Yes and No. I guess you already say this, but just to clarify: A virus evolves in all directions. To keep it simple: It evolves into more deadly, but also evolves into less deadly. The more deadly virus is usually less successful in the long run, as if it kills it's host, it has less chances to infect new hosts. Therefore over time a virus tends to evolve into a less deadly version. But in the short run it absolutely can evolve into a more deadly variant.

Evolution does not "think" in terms of biological benefit. Instead biological benefit can be a selection criteria. So in long term it looks like stuff evolve into biological benefit.
